What a Level 2 install really costs to install, by province
A Level 2 home charger install in Canada typically runs $1,000 to $4,000 before any rebate, and which province you live in changes the final bill more through the rebate you can claim than through what an electrician charges. British Columbia and Quebec still cut a real cheque toward the job. Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba currently offer nothing at the provincial level, so a homeowner in Calgary and a homeowner in Vancouver can pay the same electrician's invoice and walk away $350 to $600 apart.

The three line items that make up every quote
Strip away the marketing and a Level 2 install is three purchases bundled into one invoice.
The charger itself. Budget and mid-range Level 2 units commonly land in the $500—$1,500 range depending on amperage, Wi-Fi features and cold-weather rating.
Labour. A straightforward job. Panel already has capacity, charger location is within a few metres of the panel, is the cheap end of the range. A longer wire run, conduit through finished walls, or a detached garage pushes labour up.
The permit. Every province requires an electrical permit for a new 240V circuit, and most quotes put this at roughly $50—$300 depending on the municipality.
Add those three together and a simple install commonly clears at $1,000—$1,800 all-in, before any panel work.

The panel is the real wildcard, not the province
The single biggest swing factor in any quote is whether your electrical panel has room for a new 40—50-amp circuit. Homes built before the 1990s often have 100-amp service, which may not have capacity left once you account for heating, a range and a water heater. A licensed electrician can run a load calculation and, in many cases, install a power-management or load-shedding device for a few hundred dollars instead of a full panel upgrade. BC Hydro, for instance, treats an EV power management device as an eligible cost under its own rebate and adds a further $200 top-up for installing one.

British Columbia (BC): the most accessible rebate in the country
BC Hydro's Home EV Charger Rebate covers up to 50% of the purchase and installation cost of an eligible Level 2 charger, to a maximum of $350, for single-family homes, row homes and duplexes. Eligible costs include the charger, licensed-electrician labour, permit fees and even the electrical design work, and the charger has to appear on BC Hydro's approved list, be new, and carry CSA, cUL, ULC or cQPS certification. You apply online within 90 days of installing the charger.

Quebec: the biggest flat rebate, with a deadline attached
Quebec's Roulez vert program pays a flat $600 toward the purchase and installation of a 240-volt home charging station, provided:
- the total cost exceeds $600 before tax
- the charger is on the government's approved list, and
- a licensed electrician does the work.
Quebec's own program page estimates the charger itself costs $600 to $1,300 and installation runs $400 to $1,100 before tax, putting the average total job at about $1,500, meaning the $600 rebate can cover close to 40% of a typical install. Multiple sources report the residential stream is scheduled to wind down at the end of 2026, so it's worth confirming the current deadline before you buy rather than after.

Provinces with nothing on the table right now
Ontario ended its provincial EV incentives, including charger rebates, in 2018, and the newer ChargeON program's residential component has closed to new applications. Alberta and Saskatchewan have no provincial rebate for home chargers. Manitoba's EV purchase rebate, run through Manitoba Public Insurance, does not extend to home charging equipment. Nova Scotia's charger rebate ended alongside its vehicle rebate in 2025, and New Brunswick's Plug-In NB charger rebate ended in mid-2025. Newfoundland and Labrador supports EV purchases but not home charger installation.
Homeowners in these provinces pay the full charger-plus-labour-plus-permit total out of pocket, unless a local utility or municipality happens to run its own limited program — Hydro Ottawa has occasionally offered short-lived incentives, and it's worth a five-minute check with your local utility before you book an electrician.
PEI and Yukon are the exceptions worth knowing about. PEI's charging incentive has been reported at up to $750 toward a Level 2 charger at a personal residence, tied to the province's EV purchase incentive. Worth confirming current terms before you buy. Yukon's Good Energy Program rebate, which covered up to 50% to a maximum of $1,500, closed to new charger purchases after March 31, 2026, so it no longer applies to installs going forward.
Why the federal ZEVIP program won't help your driveway
Ottawa's Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) funds EV charger deployment in public places, on-street locations, multi-unit residential buildings, workplaces and vehicle fleets, not single-family home installs. It's a real program with real money behind it, but a homeowner installing a charger in a detached-home driveway isn't the audience it's built for. If you live in a condo or apartment building, the multi-unit stream is the one to ask your board or property manager about.
The bottom line
Budget $1,000—$1,800 for a simple, no-panel-upgrade install almost anywhere in the country, and $3,000—$5,000-plus if your panel needs work. Then subtract whatever your province actually offers: up to $350 in BC, up to $600 in Quebec, a possible $750 in PEI, and nothing at all in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Newfoundland and Labrador as of today. Get two or three fixed-price quotes from licensed electricians before you buy a charger, confirm your model is on your province's approved list if one exists, and keep every invoice. Rebate applications get rejected for missing paperwork more often than for any other reason.
